In the classic tale, the Eight Immortals are already divine — crossing the sea, each showing their own powers. The film rewinds to before any of that: eight flawed, funny, street-level mortals who bluff and scheme their way past the gods, and only then earn the name the world would remember.
The hook is not only "Chinese mythology movie," but “ordinary people becoming legends” — a fresh origin story that leads back into the older Eight Immortals mythology.
